The same qualification criteria, outlined in the following pages, apply to all of the fellowships. There is one selection committee, suitably representative of the faculty, appointed to make the selections. Departments do not rank or nominate their own students. Instead, any graduate student who meets the qualifications may nominate themselves.

Students may not engage in other forms of paid employment working, teaching, or off-campus employment during the time they receive a Dissertation Fellowship. Additionally, students may not take classes outside of their dissertation hours nor may they accept another fellowship or grant during the same time.

The collections support research in all areas of the humanities, including literature, photography, film, art, the performing arts, music, and cultural history. Dissertation fellowships are available for graduate students whose doctoral dissertations require use of the Center's collections. Applicants who receive a dissertation fellowship are required to inform the College of Arts and Sciences if they subsequently receive support for their dissertation writing from other sources. The Woodrow Wilson Dissertation Fellowships in Women’s Studies support the final year of dissertation writing for PhD candidates in the humanities and social sciences whose work addresses topics of women and gender in interdisciplinary and original ways.
